Rando Kartsepp, Robin Sillamae and Erki Vali told the Postimees newspaper they were working at the Sindi dam on the frozen Parnu River in southwestern Estonia when they saw an animal frantically swimming in a maze of ice. They rescued the ice-coated animal by making a path in the ice for it, and then took it to a shelter. The workers cuddled the animal, which was suffering from shock and hypothermia, on the way to a nearby animal clinic.
“He was calm, slept on my legs. When I wanted to stretch them, he raised his head for a moment,” Kartsepp told Postimess newspaper about the drive to safety. Neither the workers or the vets realized what the animal really was but later, a hunter told the workers that they had been snuggling a one-year-old wolf. Tarvo Markson, the head of the Terveks animal clinic that took care of the wolf, said it was relatively easy to care for because it was only a year old. A larger, full-grown wolf would have been a much different story.
“At first, he was so done in for he didn’t resist at all. We simply kept him in this room. But once he started to get an idea of the situation, I felt things might quickly take a turn for the dangerous. We got him into a cage,” Markson said to Postimees.
The young wolf recovered after a day and was released back into the wild with a GPS collar. The Estonian Environment Agency wants to track the wolf when it’s back in the wild.
Estonia has an estimated 200 wolves. The grey wolf was voted Estonia’s national animal by nature organizations in 2018.
